MARLEY Documentary Theatrical Release

Congratulations to our clients, Cowboy Films & Berhane Productions, for the theatrical release of MARLEY, which is being distributed in the US by Magnolia Pictures. The documentary debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, with a North American premiere at SXSW in March. Now the highly anticipated film is coming to audiences worldwide with its theatrical release on April 20th.

We worked with Cowboy Films and Berhane Productions to license archival footage for MARLEY, the definitive life story of reggae musician Bob Marley. As the first ever family-authorized documentary of his life, the long-awaited film offers an in-depth portrait of the legendary musician. The majority of the content was from our BBC Motion Gallery archive. The footage features rare performances by Bob Marley & the Wailers from Old Grey Whistle Test; establishing shots of 1970s London where Marley spent two years in self-imposed exile; news stories from the 1976 & 1980 Jamaican elections; and interviews with the late musician. The client also licensed footage from the Miss World pageant, which was unique in that the film’s production team had secured permission from the rights holder to use a clip from the pageant, but Miss World no longer had the master footage. With help from our expert research team, we located the master within the BBC archive and delivered footage of Marley’s girlfriend, and mother of Damian Marley, as she was crowned Miss World 1976. The clips we provided put the film’s revelatory interviews with his children and other people who knew him best into context. The film opens in North American & the UK on April 20th, and will roll out worldwide throughout the summer. For more information on the film, click here.
